Gamma Rho Lambda Brings ‘Super Rush’ to UT Austin
A table outside the William C. Powers, Jr. Student Activity Center is carrying a bigger message than its candy bowl suggests: Gamma Rho Lambda’s Tau Chapter is recruiting for Fall 2026, and the organization is positioning itself as an explicitly LGBTQ+ home inside UT Austin’s Greek-life ecosystem.
The Stinger News encountered the chapter during campus outreach and recorded an on-camera conversation at its recruitment table. Rather than attribute dialogue from audio that could not be independently transcribed with sufficient accuracy, this report relies on what is directly visible in the footage, the chapter’s Fall 2026 recruitment material, and records published by UT Austin and Gamma Rho Lambda National Sorority.
A queer Greek organization with a decade at UT
UT Austin’s Office of the Dean of Students identifies Gamma Rho Lambda as a sorority in the Affiliate Leadership Circle. The university lists the Tau Chapter’s local founding in 2015, while Gamma Rho Lambda National says the UT group began as a provisional chapter that year and formally became Tau Chapter on April 30, 2016.
Nationally, Gamma Rho Lambda was founded in 2003 at Arizona State University. The national organization says membership is open to people of all gender identities. At UT, Tau has built its identity around LGBTQ+ inclusion, philanthropy and community programming.
UT currently lists Elliott Head as chapter president, a 2.5 minimum GPA for membership and a six-to-eight-week new-member program. The chapter’s national profile also highlights support for Equality Texas and other local nonprofits, and notes that Tau received Outstanding Community Involvement and Outstanding Chapter honors at Gamma Rho Lambda’s 2024 national convention.
Fall 2026: ‘Super Rush’
The recruitment flyer visible in The Stinger News footage brands the semester as ‘Super Rush’ and describes Gamma Rho Lambda as ‘UT Austin’s first and only LGBTQ+ Greek org.’ The schedule mixes information sessions with social events designed to lower the barrier to walking into Greek life for the first time.
The posted calendar includes an Info Session on Sept. 8, a Board Game Night on Sept. 9, a Lucky Lab Meetup on Sept. 15, Trivia Night on Sept. 16, Campus Exploration on Sept. 18, Cape Decoration on Sept. 19, another Info Session on Sept. 22, Design a Hero Signal on Sept. 23, Jackbox Game Night on Sept. 24, South Mall Picnic on Sept. 25, another Info Session on Sept. 30 and a Superhero Movie Night on Oct. 1. The flyer directs interested students to tau@gammarholambda.org for questions.
Why this matters
Greek life at a major university is not one culture. It is dozens of organizations competing to define what belonging, tradition and campus community can look like. Gamma Rho Lambda occupies a specific lane in that landscape: a sorority structure built around a membership model that is intentionally inclusive of queer and trans students rather than requiring them to fit into a conventional gender binary.
That distinction matters on a campus where student organizations often become a student’s first durable social network. Recruitment tables are easy to walk past. For the students who stop, however, the conversation can be about something much larger than joining another club. It can be about finding a community that was designed with them in mind.
The Stinger News will continue covering UT student organizations as part of its new UT Students Orgs vertical, focusing on the people, missions, events and campus cultures that rarely receive sustained local reporting.
